Brake Linings and Clutch Facings based on CNSL Resin play an important role in the Road Transport Industry. The reaction product of cashew nut shell liquid with formaldehyde leads to a completely cross linked product named as Friction Dust. It is a common ingredient of friction linings formulations. Friction Dust represents upto 20% by weight of friction elements, moderately uniform co-efficient of friction over a wear of the elements and moderately uniform co-efficient action.
Cashew Friction Dust have the property of absorbing the heat created by friction in the brake lining action by maintaining their braking efficiency longer, they help in minimizing the accidents and loss of material and man power. The advantages of Cashew Resin compared with Synthetic Phenolic Resin is that they produce a softer material which is more efficient for cold wear, this covers temperature upto 205°C which is the maximum and is likely to be generated in low speed automobiles. The high performance effective friction lining (Brake & Clutch Facing) must possess moderate high coefficient of friction independent or temperature, high thermal resistance, high strength and elasticity, low wear and abrasive resistance to hydraulic fluids, gasoline and water, low or no noise at all. This would be achieved by careful balance for various components of friction linings. It is preferred for the manufacture of Brake Linings and Clutch Facings because of increased hardness, toughness and high resistance to chemicals and temperature.
